Stay Healthy In High School
By Danae V.
When starting high school the amount of stress that one takes on is incredible, and can affect how you eat, sleep, and your lifestyle in general. On top of the stress add on a changing schedule, and a change in your normal routine. All of this can have a great effect on how you eat, what you eat, and how active you stay. It’s very important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and not allow these drastic changes to affect your health.
Eating the unhealthy food that is offered in the cafeteria isn’t the best, and sometimes it’s not appealing at all. I personally cannot take a bite of the cafeteria food; it makes me sick to my stomach just by smelling it. Now if you pack your own lunch that can make a difference, you then have control over what you eat in school; maybe a fruit salad, or a regular salad, with a healthy dressing. Having a healthy meal doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in an ice cream or some French fries, but it’s all about moderation and making sure you don’t surround every meal by simply processed foods, and grease.
Now when it comes to exercising, instead of taking the bus home why don’t you walk? Or if you live a few stops away from school, you can also use this as an opportunity to walk, and burn some calories. If you have more time in your schedule, you can go running on the weekends, take a jog in the morning before school to wake yourself up. Or if you don’t want to go outside why not do some jumping jacks or jump rope during a commercial break instead of staying on the couch and finishing your snacks.
As a high school student there’s one thing you will constantly feel as if you are deprived of, and that is sleep. Which means that it’s something you must stay on top of, your parents always nag you to go to sleep early, and how you overslept, well going to sleep around nine or ten can help satisfy those eight to nine hours of sleep that you need. This will help you be more energized and avoid all those sugary drinks that you usually consume in order to stay up. Lastly make sure that you are consuming the suggested eight to ten cups of water daily, in order to keep yourself hydrated, cleanse your body from toxins, and keep your brain sharp.
